#ACT4SDGs: Align your programs to citizens needs, Rachael Misan-Ruppee to Government

In pursuant of the aims and objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals,SDGs, of the United Nations, various tiers of Government in Nigeria have been advised to align their programs and policies to the needs of the citizenry in order to meet the “Agenda 2030” of the Sustainable Development Goals.

This was contained in a keynote address delivered by the Executive Director, Development Initiative for Community Impact, DICI, Rachael Misan-Ruppee, during a “Citizen Interactive Forum on SDGs” , held at Ujevwu Town Hall, Udu LGA, Delta state, to mark the four years of existence of the Sustainable Development Goals.

According to the DICI Executive Director, this year event is tagged “Global Week to #ACT4SDGs”

“Today mark the fourth year the Sustainable development goals came into existence, on the 25th of September 2015, world leaders came together at the United Nations and agreed to sign into existence the Sustainable development goals.”

” It was United Nations SDGs Action Campaign Team that came up with the theme of this year event, global week to #ACT4SDGs, which means all over the world we need to act for the SDGs”

“If we don’t act for the Sustainable development goals then we cannot achieve the year 2030 which is the agenda 2030.”

“We just have eleven more years to achieve all the seventeen goals, but funny enough some people don’t know anything about the SDGs, and that is our major reason for coming to this community, getting here we discovered that non of them has heard about SDG, they are still living in MDGs. Good enough,We have succeeded in sensitising them on the SDGs, and why they should key into it”

On what the people of Ujevwu community should expect after the event, The Executive Director, during an interview with The South Daily, said “after this interaction forum, we shall put together a comprehensive report, I will share a copy with the community, the local government chairman, and the Delta state office of the SDG, so that the local government can now align their projects to meeting the SDGs. The community people can now ask the local government and also tell them what they want to be done for them.”

On the readiness of the government of all level to work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, Misan- Ruppee, described their (government) efforts as commendable, urging them to do more to beat the agenda 2030.

“The government has really shown interest in meeting these goals, particularly the government of Delta state. Delta state government have created an agency for the SDGs. In 2018 & 2019 budget of Delta state there were allocations to the SDGs. Delta state government have also translated the seventeen goals to different ethnic languages in the state, so we have in Urhobo, Isoko, Ijaw, Itsekiri, Anioma”

The Vice President of Ujevwu Community, Freeborn Denzu, who participated in the interactive forum, expresses joy, urging the DICI and other organizations that partnered with them to keep on with the good work.

“They(organisation) tried, the awareness we have been given today will really help us as a community, they should have it mind to return again because this whole thing is like a school, and we are learning from them. On our part we shall further pass the message to our people who couldn’t meet up for the meeting, and by the time this organisation will return they will see what we have achieve”

Another participant, Robison Kenairu, said the interactive forum was an eye opening event.

“This is an eye opening event, because we have been blind to it before now, but by the grace of God today our eyes have been opened.”

“There were so many things we didn’t understand before now as a community, but now we are now well informed. A door have just been opened for Ujevwu community to go forward, and things we are suppose to do that we haven’t been doing before. So like I have said before is an eye opening program that had opened good way for us”

“If events of this nature is repeatedly organised a lot of things will fall in place”

The event was organised by the Development Initiative for Community Impact, DICI, in partnership with the Neferok Development Initiative (NeDI), Peace and Community Empowerment Initiative, and Ideal Women Advancement Initiative.
