Edo Government on Thursday inaugurated 11 sub-committees for the successful hosting of the 20th National Sports Festival scheduled for March 2020 in Benin City.
The Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, said in Benin that the aim was also to ensure the state won the edition, tagged: “Edo 2020″.
The sub-committees are: Accommodation, Ceremonial and Protocol, Feeding, Finance, Games Village Management, Medical, Publicity and Communication, Security, Team Edo Participation, Transportation and Venue and Facilities.
Shaibu told members of the sub-committees to discharge their duties diligently because the success of the festival was in their hands.
He urged them to use the opportunity of the Games to engage the youth and discover talents.
“You are all aware that when they are engaged in the daytime, they will be too tired at night to engage in anti-social activities.
“The government’s work is not just to create an enabling environment, but to also encourage our young ones to discover their talents. Gov. Godwin Obaseki believes in youths of today as the true leaders of tomorrow.
“We are not only using sports as a mark of unity, we are also using it to make them understand that they can take advantage of God’s talent in them to contribute their own quota to the development of our state,” he said.
Shaibu boasted that the state was hosting the game to win the edition because in every sector of sports, an Edo son or daughter must be involved.
According to him, we want to return Edo as the number one state known for sports.
He said the government would want to use the festival to reclaim its lost glory and urged the sub-committees to make it work.
Speaking on behalf of the other sub-committee members, Darlington Obaseki, the Chairman, Sub-committee on Medicals, said that they would put in their best for a successful event.
“We see this as a call to duty, and we will ensure a world class festival that will set a template for other states to emulate,” he said.
