NYG: Anambra, Edo win gold each in Judo event

Usulor Usulor of Anambra and Joshua Ajuozie of Edo have both won gold medals in the Judo event at the ongoing National Youth Games (NYG) in Ilorin.

Usulor defeated Angela Elechi of Delta in the girl’s Judo 44kg final, while Joshua Ajuozie of Edo defeated Kehinde Sulaimon of Lagos in the boy’s Judo 42kg final.

In the bronze medal contest, Odunayo Babalola of Ondo State beat Alison Ekong of Akwa Ibom after a golden score duel in the girl’s Judo 44kg.

In the boy’s Judo 42kg, Ubongabasi Iniobong of Akwa Ibom beat Success Useni to win the bronze medal.

Anambra’s Ajuozie told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he was happy to win his state’s first gold medal at the competition.

“I am very happy to win the first gold medal for my state because it is not easy.

“When I was about fighting with my opponent, the Team Lagos supporters were intimidating us with their instrument but I remained focused when I heard the voice of my coach which motivated me to beat him.

“I want to use this opportunity to thank my coach and parents for supporting me when I made the decision to fight in Judo.

“I promise to make them more proud in the future,” Ajuozie said.

NAN reports that Judo was one of the 34 sports being competed for in the 5th edition of the Games featuring 30 states, including the Federal Capital Territory.
