Warri South-West Chairman Promises Support for SDGs Localisation in the council

 

The Executive Chairman, Warri South-West Local Government Council, Hon Duke Tuoyo, has assured his constituents the support of his government in achieving the Goal three (Good health and wellbeing), and goal Eight ( Decent Work and Economic Growth),of the “Sustainable Development Goals”.

Hon. Duke who chairs a Dialogue Forum on the SDGs, tagged “Advancing the Localisation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Delta state”, put together by Development Initiative for Community Impact, at the headquarters of the Warri South-West Local Government Council, Ogbe-Ijoh, gave the assurance during an interview chat with The South Daily , calling for stakeholders collaboration in achieving the SDGs.

“At the Local Government level we have limited funds, but gradually we are picking up and getting closer to the people. So we shall give all our necessary support to make sure the goals are achieve at the end of the day.”

“Like I said we cannot implement all of the goals, but we shall be looking forward to implement the goal three which is good health and wellbeing, and goal Eight which is descent work and economic growth. We shall train and empower the people living with disability and that is descent enough and will also encourage economic growth”

Rachael Misan-Ruppee, Executive Director, DICI

Earlier in her opening address, the Executive Director, Development Initiative for Community Impact, Rachael Misan-Ruppee, who took participants through the Seventeen Sustainable Development Goals, urges them to be involve in monitoring and implementation of the SDGs.

Speaking on a topic “The Role of the Local Government in Achieving the Agenda 2030”, the Technical Adviser to the Delta state Office of the SDGs, who is also the facilitator, Chiedozie Onyeukwu,
Described the role Local Government which ranges from administration, coordination, and harmonisation of inputs from communities as very key if the SDGs must be successfully implemented.

“The role of the Local Government is very simple, number one is to see a way of engendering the communities to develop their own community charter of demands which is also known as community strategy document; so that the community can conduct their need assessment and come up with issues that has to do with them, cutting across all gender and everybody inclusively. Ones they come up this document theirs is to push it to the Local Government so that when Local Government is developing their budget issues from these communities should form priority needs in the development of that budget, on the same vein as they are transmitting same, the Local Government should be able to showcase their community names, so the state can also take inputs from communities while preparing their budget”

” Secondly the Local Government must try as much as they can to localise the SDGs in their various Area Council, instead top-to-buttom approach, it should buttom-to-top approach, it should come from the people. The best way to get this done is taking responsibility of their life and ensuring that they are on the drivers sit, they are the ones that calls the short”

He also said the Government, Civil Society Organisations, Multinationals, Community Leaders, and every other individual are to be held accountable if the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations fails.

Group Action plan session

The Dialogue forum on SDGs also feature Group Exercise where participants drew action plan on the SDGs. According to their various action plan, participants choose in order of priority Goal 4 Quality Education, Goal 3 Good health and wellbeing, Goal 1 & 6 No poverty, & Clean water and Sanitation, Goal 14 Life below water, and Goal 16 Peace Justice and strong institution.

Participants also state in the order of priority the goals more crucial to them for implementation and Monitoring

Representatives of the Coalition of Civil Society on SDGs in Delta state, Ayo Okotie, commends the Development Initiative for Community Impact, the organisers of the dialogue forum, calling for more sensitization across all board.
