Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, Vice-Chancellor, Igbinedion University Okada (IUO), on Thursday called for effective management and enforcement, research synergy and technology acquisition in universities to promote national development.
Ezemonye made the call at a two-day training on Creation, Management and Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights organised by IUO in collaboration with National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) for staff and students of the university in Benin.
He said that research was the bedrock of any tertiary institution, adding that research and development was the guiding principle of all establishments.
“Today’s ceremony marks one of the milestones of Igbinedion University because every university, whether local or international has some assignments, which is teaching, researching and provision of community service.
“One of these assignments for IUO is the area of management, enforcement and research.
“Research, development and demonstration involve the third party. Research is the key to problems in tertiary institutions,” he said.
Ezemonye said that NOTAP remained the fundamental platform for technology, activation and adaptation for the youths of Nigeria.
“Our choice to collaborate with NOTAP and their immediate favourable response to collaborate with IOU is something that requires our applause,” he said.
Dr Dan’Azumi Ibrahim, the Director-General of NOTAP represented by Dr Adamu Tandama, the Director, Consultancy Services, said the primary aim of NOTAP was to regulate the inflow of foreign technologies that empowers industries.
“We regulate the inflow of foreign technologies because we have to have a database about the technologies that comes to our country and also to energise our own system,” he said.
He encouraged students to key into the training programme, adding that it would also help on their everyday life.
