Why aged people need regular medical check up – CMD of UBTH

Prof Darlington Obaseki,the Chief Medical Director of University of Benin Teaching Hospital(UBTH) has advised aged people to go for regular checkups to avoid diseases which could lead to death.

Prof Obaseki gave the advice shortly after a program organized by UBTH to celebrate the 2019 United Nations International Day of Older Persons(UNIDOP) in Uselu market,Benin on Tuesday.

The theme:”The journey to age Equality” aims at teaching old people how they can improve on their health in order to live longer.

“This program was organized to celebrate our fathers and mothers above 60 years of age in Edo.It is a program celebrated every October by the United Nations for elderly people”.

“We the management of UBTH are prepared to carry out some checkups on hypertension,diabetes,nuggets for successful aging amongst others”.

“Living a healthy life in old age is very important.”,he said.

Chairman of Egor Local Government Area,Eghe Ogbemudia represented by the Vice Chairman Egor Local Government Area,Mr Rex Benjamin thanked the management of UBTH for organizing free checkups for elderly persons in Edo.

Mr Rex said that majority of elderly persons do not have the opportunity of going through medical checkups regularly.

Dr Sunny Okeigbemen,Consultants,Community Dentistry in UBTH who spoke on oral care for successful aging advised elderly persons to brush their mouth regularly to avoid cavity.

“To protect your oral health, practice good oral hygiene daily”.

“Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled brush using fluoride toothpaste”.

“Eat a healthy diet and limit food with added sugars. Replace your toothbrush every three months or sooner if bristles are splayed or worn”,he said.

The checkups includes:screening for diabetes and hypertension,nutritional assessment,oral health education and intervention,nuggets for successful aging among others.
