Ekiti State House of Assembly has ordered the 16 suspended council chairmen to refund N3.6 billion to the state’s coffers.
The lawmakers said the order was predicated on the report of a panel, which indicted the chairmen of mismanagement.
Making the declaration at the valedictory session of the fifth assembly yesterday, the lawmakers recommended appropriate sanctions on the council bosses.
The development followed recommendations by the House Committee on Public Accounts in its report presented by Sunday Akinniyi (Ikere Constituency 2) and adopted by the house.
Former speaker, Kola Oluwawole (Moba Constituency 1), pleaded on behalf of the chairmen for leniency. But majority of his colleagues turned down his plea.
However, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in the house opposed the recommendation for sanction, claiming that the screening was full of irregularities.
They were, however, overruled by the speaker, Adeniran Alagbada, who said the chairmen went too far in their actions.
Alagbada cited his council, Ise/Orun, where over N300 million was set aside for building of a secretariat, but the contract was not executed.
