Edo Medical Women donate books on menstrual matters to schools libraries

The Edo branch of Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), on Friday, donated books on menstrual matters to 100 secondary schools in the state as part of efforts to promote menstrual hygiene among girls.

While delivering the books on behalf of the association, its President, Dr Adesuwa Urhoghide-Edigin, said the donation was to commemorate the 2021 World Menstrual Hygiene Day, annually celebrated across the world on May 28.

The special day is dedicated to inform and educate people about the importance of Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM).

The reason behind celebrating the day on May 28 is said to be that the average interval of a menstrual cycle is 28 days and girls/women menstruate an average of five days each month, and May is the fifth month of the year, according to WASH United, a German non-profit organisation and founder of the Menstrual Hygiene Day.

The MWAN president, therefore, said that the donation would kick off with 25 schools, while others would be made within the next few days.

Some of the schools where the donations were made in Benin were Sacred Hearts Secondary school, Don Bosco Science Academy, Emotan Secondary School, Ebenezer Secondary School and Gabus Academy.

Others were Adolor College, Idia College, Standard Secondary School, Word of Faith Secondary School and the University of Benin Staff Secondary School among others.
The medical union also tutored the girls on how to make reusable pad.

Urhoghide-Edigin said “we choose to educate girls on menstrual matters using Irrua girls secondary school as our focal point.

“We also donated pads to the girls using Irrua girls as our focal point. We have donated emergency pad box to schools using Irrua girls as our starting point.

“Educating students on menstruation and menstrual hygiene is very important.”
