Oncologist makes breakthrough in Breast Cancer

Dr Oludare Adeyemi,a consultant radiation oncologist and Chief Medical Director of La’ Newton Oncology Clinic in Benin,Nigeria has performed a recent breakthrough for breast cancer patients which does not requires mastectomy.

Mastectomy is a surgical operation which requires the cutting of the breast.

Dr Adeyemi disclosed this in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday in Benin.

He defined breast cancer as “a cancer that forms in the cells of the breasts”.

“The procedure for the breakthrough is called Microseeds treatment using radioactive seeds.

“This procedure was first performed in Canada about two years,but is now been practiced in few places in USA.

“This Microseeds treatment is the first in the whole of Africa.It has come to Africa through Nigeria.

He said that the procedure conserves a breast,adding that conserving a breast is a vital for cosmetic reasons.

Dr Adeyemi said that Microseeds treatment takes a day procedure unlike the convention radiotherapy that takes four weeks to be completed.

“The procedure is done when Microseeds are placed in the tumor bed under ultrasound guided”,he said.

According to a study,Dr Adeyemi said that the commonest cause of advanced breast cancer in Nigeria is fear of mastectomy which is equivalent to death.

He said,”it must be emphasized that Microseeds Treatment procedure is only appropriate for now,for early breast cancer”.

Rita Ojo,a 38 old lady with breast cancer testified about the Microseeds treatment performed by Dr Adeyemi.

She said the procedure was performed on her within a day.

“I don’t feel any pain.I am so happy the procedure was very successful.Dr Adeyemi did the wonders”,she said.

Dr Adeyemi said the factors that cause breast cancer are main hormonal factors,age,environmental factors and lifestyle.

He said the symptoms of breast cancer includes:breast lump or thickening that feels different from the surrounding tissue,Change in the size, shape or appearance of a breast,Changes to the skin over the breast, such as dimpling.

Others are a newly inverted nipple
Peeling, scaling, crusting or flaking of the pigmented area of skin surrounding the nipple (areola) or breast skin,redness or pitting of the skin over your breast, like the skin of an orange.

He said breast cancer can be prevented if women familiarize with their breasts through breast self-exam/awareness,exercise most days of the week,maintain a healthy weight and choose a healthy diet.

He advised women to go for regular screening for breast cancer in order to detect the disease early.

Dr. Adeyemi also a lecturer in the Department of Radiotherapy in University of Benin(Uniben) and a consultant in University of Benin Teaching Hospital(UBTH).
