Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo has warned members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) posted to the state to shun unnecessary travels during their service year to avoid road mishaps.
Obaseki, represented by his Deputy, Philip Shauibu, gave the warning during the passing out parade of the 2019 Batch ‘C’ Stream II corps members at the NYSC orientation camp, Okada.
He said that many corps members had lost their lives through preventable and avoidable road crashes.
The governor noted that the parents and the nation had invested in such victims and were waiting to reap the benefits of such investments from them.
He lauded the management of NYSC for making its skill acquisition programme compulsory for the corps members during the service year.
Obaseki said the introduction of the skill acquisition programme by the scheme was in line with the Federal Government’s policy of equipping young graduates with the necessary skills to boost self-reliance.
“Your positive impact is felt in different sectors of the economy, especially within the host communities.
“Edo state government and it’s people place much value on your contributions to the development of the statet,” he said.
The NYSC Coordinator in Edo, Adebayo Ojo, urged the corps members to use the skills, intellect and talents gained during the training for the common good of the people.
According to him, the corps members have proven that Nigerian youths, given the right support, training and guidance can realise the dream and vision of the founding fathers of the scheme.
Ojo advised the corps members to seek permission through the right channel of communication whenever they wanted to travel outside their places of primary assignments.
