Pay your water bills, Okonta Urge Deltans

Delta State Commissioner for Water Resources Development, Rt Hon. Martin Okonta, has admonished Deltans and residents in the state to always protect all public water facilities in their area.

Hon. Okonta who gave the admonition while speaking with the press shortly after he visited some water schemes in Asaba and Ogwashi-Uku, reiterated Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s commitment to meet the yearnings of Deltans in the water sector by providing sustainable water supply.

He urged water consumers in the state to always pay for their water rates, adding that a number of water standpoints in Asaba had been metered to enable government evaluate the quantity of water delivery and usage.

The Water Resources Commissioner who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Mrs Felicia Adun, the Director of Irritation, Drainages and Flood Control, Mr Emmanuel Odogun, the commissioner’s Special Assistant, Hon. Eledu Azonim among other Directors in the ministry stated that the declaration of the state of emergency on water by the governor was a critical approach to ensure that Deltans accessed water.

Rt. Hon. Okonta, dismissed insinuations that public water schemes in the state had been abandoned, saying that what was needed was to improve on their state, just as he attributed the poor condition of the water projects to aging.

The commissioner, who disclosed that water would be extended to developing areas in Asaba, said that there would be an evaluation to quantify the number of residents in such areas and called on Deltans to connect water into their homes.

Speaking in an interview, a resident in Asaba, Elder Famous Benafa, who commended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for his resilient approach towards providing water in Asaba and other areas across the state, said that the water standpoints domiciled where he resided was running effectively.

Elder Benafa, however appealed to the state government to ensure the sustenance of water supply and improve on the existing facilities, adding that he never defaulted in paying his water rate particularly with the availability of meters and advised water consumers to reciprocate government’s gestures by paying for their water consumption.
