The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called on the Edo Government to provide security for its members to deliver medical services to residents.
The association also appealed to the State Government to fund security agencies to ensure that medical practitioners were safe.
Dr Valentine Omoifo, the state Chairman of NMA, made the call while addressing newsmen on Wednesday in Benin.
He spoke against the backdrop of the release of a Chief Medical Director that was kidnapped on Aug. 26, at Irrua.
“Over a week ago one of our Professors, Prof. Sylvanus Okogbenin, the Chief Medical Director of Irrua Teaching Hospital, was kidnapped in the middle of the town.
“We earlier appealed to security agencies for more vigilance and ensuring that our colleague was released unhurt,’’ he said.
Omoifo said that Okogbenin was released unhurt in the early hours of this morning September 4,2019.
He said the NMA was happy with efforts the state government, security agencies and medical practitioners made to ensure the release of the CMD.
“We thank all those who supported the family of Prof. Okogbenin and the Nigerian Medical Association in this trying time and tension,’’ he said.
He expressed his condolence to the gallant officers who lost their lives during the attack.
Besides, Omoifo appealed to the state government and security agencies to ensure that surveillance and vigilance were carried out to expose such acts in the state.
He called on the government to ensure adequate funding of the police in order to buy proper equipment and facilities to work effectively.
