Founder of low dose brachytherapy treatment for prostrate cancer advise patients to avoid greater complications.

Dr Oludare Adeyemi,Chief Medical Director of La’ Newton Oncology Clinic and founder of the first Prostrate Cancer Brachytherapy in Nigeria has advised patients living with prostrate cancer to go for treatment to avoid complications.

Dr Adeyemi disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Benin on Wednesday.

He defined Prostate cancer as “cancer that occurs in the prostate,a small walnut-shaped gland in men that produces the seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm”.

He said Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men, that usually grows slowly and is initially confined to the prostate gland, where it may not cause serious harm.

“Most times when the stimulus is removed the growth continues in the body”.

“Prostrate cancer is curable when it is detected earlier”.

“About 30% of cancer are preventable,”he said.

Dr Adeyemi,the first Nigerian Doctor to discover permanent treatment for prostrate cancer patients using low dose brachytherapy said that focusing radiation on cancer cell destroys the DNA(where the reproductive ability of the cells reside).

“When the DNA is destroyed,the cells can no longer produce,it becomes dead permanently”.

“Brachytherapy is the newest,modern form of treatment of prostrate anyone can think of in recent times”.

“There is high dose brachytherapy which takes a longer period of treatment and also low dose brachytherapy which takes two hours”,he said.

Dr Adeyemi,the pioneer of low dose brachytherapy in the whole of Africa said brachytherapy treatment is cheaper,quicker and permanent on like other forms of cancer treatment.

“Standard cancer treatments alone may not be as effective as combination therapy and may have unacceptable side effect”.

“The medications are well understood, with low side effects, offering you an acceptable quality of life”,he said.

He revealed that some challenges of his present breakthrough in low dose brachytherapy treatment for prostrate cancer includes:lack of power,location,environment,challenges from colleagues amongst others.

He said that the cause of Prostrate cancer is not yet known,but has predisposing factors that can promote the occurrence of prostrate cancer.

He said the factors includes:Age,food,race,alcohol,family history,drugs and obesity.

Dr Adeyemi said Prostate cancer that’s more advanced may cause signs and symptoms such as:Trouble urinating,Decreased force in the stream of urine,Blood in semen,Discomfort in the pelvic area,Bone pain and Erectile dysfunction.

He advised patients with such symptoms to visit any oncologist for treatment.
