What LAPO asked Edo Govt. to do in tackling cancer

The Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO) , an NGO, on Friday urged the Edo government to create awareness and enlightenment programmes in the state to tackle cancer.

Sabina Idowu-Osehobo, Executive Director of LAPO, represented by Honestus Obadiora made the call during LAPO Community Campaign for Cancer Control(LAPO-C4) program on Friday in Benin.

“LAPO believes that poverty is reinforced by disease and vice versa.Today cancer is the major cause of mortality with high economic burden on affected households”.

“In Nigeria,over 100,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year,out of which about 80% die due to late detection”.

“LAPO C4 project was initiated in order to promote cancer prevention through massive enlightenment outreaches in Nigeria”,he said.

He said that the aim is to contribute to Goal 1 of the National Cancer Control Plan(NCCP) 2018-2022 which is to increase cancer information, dissemination, education and cancer outreach services nationwide.

Prof Omokhoa Adeleye,Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO-C4) Consultant urged the Federal government to provide a means of creating enlightenment program in the state.

“LAPO C4 program is to further promote stakeholders engagement for resources mobilization”.

“Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells divide uncontrollably”he said.

Prof Adeleye said some signs of cancer include:Bloating,Between-Period Bleeding,Skin Changes,Blood in Your Pee or Stool,Changes in Lymph Nodes,Trouble Swallowing,Weight Loss Without Trying,Heartburn,Mouth Changes,Fever,Fatigue,Cough,pain,Belly Pain and Depression.

He appealed to the state government to provide machines to detect cancer on time.
